I've been trying to become a better guitarist, but have hit a bit of a rut. A co-worker of mine suggested that I give a bass guitar a try (he is a bassist). So... I just won this a few days ago on EBay

Ovation Ultra Bass

I know nothing about the Ultra series. I tried doing a search on this message board, but didn't find what I was looking for.

Any ideas, comments, etc. would be welcome.

If it arrives in playable condition, you have a good bass.

It is a Samick (Korea) body with Schaller hardware, assembled in Marion, North Carolina in 1984. It was put together under the same roof as the Ultra GP's that are going for 2K now. The Ultra series was comprised of the GS (guitar Strat) and the GP (guitar Paul). The only bass from this venture was in the GS line that you have. Miles and CWK might be able to tell you more.

Enjoy!

Thanks for your reply, but what I'm looking for is this: what was the Ultra series???

The feeling I get is that is was a pre-Celebrity series. Like Marin-Sigma Gibson-Epiphone.

Ovation says : here are our good guitars (Ovation) and our cheap asian knock outs Ultra.

At the same time, I feel the Ultra's where more than that. I just looked on EBay and saw a Thunderbold Ultra. Different from other Ovations at the time, but they don't seem to be cheap copies.

Where does the Ultra series fit in the overall Ovation family?

I saw that listing, too, but I think you read the syntax wrong. It is Ovation Thunderbolt, ultra rare.

So, it is neither an Ultra nor is it it ultra rare. There are quite a few 'bolts out there. The Thunderbolt was a USA model made for a short time in the late '80's.

Bradley Put a set of round wounds on this thing, crank it up to 10 and make the guitarists work for a living! Cool Bass.
Nice thing is there aren't that many out there and even fewer being used on stage, etc. You'll be the only guy around using one I'll bet? Enjoy Randy

It's from the 83-85 timeframe. Ultra got used alot so don't get caught up in that. Nice bass.

The bass arrived today. The body looks to be in very good condition. The neck looks clean, the fretboard has a ding near the 10th fret, nothing horrible. I tuned the bass and plugged it in, every seems to work.

My only concern is the neck. The action seems high and the neck looks bowed a bit (I'm very nearsighted, so it's hard for me to tell.) I gave the truss rod a 1/4 turn to see if it will help.

Overall, I think I got a good deal.

Since I've never played a bass before, could someone hear tell me what the action should be like?
