Alright....I'll fess up. I have been to quite a few Trek conventions in my time. But let it be known that I NEVER wore any type of costume. Tho in fact I did stand out from the crowd because I acually came with a date.
There was always that "take a chance" kind of thrill of ..."Yeah...I'm here...but I'll never get like that guy!" It was never hard to find someone there who really threw off the bell curve.
One time my 12 year old son won a trivia contest. He got to be the kid who went up on stage to hold up items for auction. As a reward, they loaded him up with about $300 worth of stuff including a very nice jacket.
From various posts it's obvious that there are at least a couple closet Trekkers among us. It's alright brothers...come on out and let that geek flag wave.

Unbeleivable. What a great way to beat the after-gig hangover this morning. Lotsa laughs. Choked on my coffee. Only went to one local Star Trek convention back in the late 80s, and only because I was guaranteed to meet George Takei and Jimmy Doohan. Pretty cool. I'm by no means an afficianado, but I do think the original series was cool. Way too much to follow with all the spin-offs though. I try not to judge people, but that lineup in that link is just begging for a beating. I'll bet some of those goofy getups cost as much as a good used O too. Sad. Oh the humanity....

I went to DragonCon once... to photograph a bunch of Klingons. They insisted on going to the Hard Rock Cafe (two blocks down) in full costume.

The only costume I had was the bag over my head.... and was thus dubbed "the unknown Klingon".

I can understand the costume part... its the not bathing attitude of those "fans" I really dont understand. I suppose its part of the counter cultiure they're in. Sun daylight, dont bathe, drink lots... etc etc. Its a different world for those people.

I've been to a few Star Trek Conventions. I actually would dress up in a regular Star Trek:TNG uniform and that's how I would go. For acouple of halloweens i did the complete Klingon Makeup thing. It was all in fun, but some of teh ones i would run into at the conventions took it WAY TOO Seriously. I would always loveto go to browse around the dealer rooms, and see the scheduled guests and maybe walk away with an autograph or two. I don't believe I ever stayed a full day.
