If I ever learn to play an electric guitar, then maybe I'll pull out all the stops. I can't even get the Ultra GS in tune since I changed the strings. Every time I start drooling over a Viper or something like it, I start thinking, "What would I ever do with it?"
Notwithstanding the above, I bid on another Ultra GS today, just because it was cheap, until someone ran it up over $100.

I kept the guitar at my office for a couple of months, then brought it home. The wife didn't notice for a few weeks, it just sat there with the other guitars, then one night she said something like: hey that looks different, and you say oh this, my friend (fill in the name of a reliable friend who'll lie for you)sold it to me for (say a ridiculously low price that she won't quibble with).

Works great, except she'll say, why so cheap, and you say; ah, you know, he just wanted to pay me back for all the help I've given him over the years, he's a pal. That should end it.

I had two similar experiences. The only difference was that the alibi was real, and my wife initially mistook them for a fabricated story.

#1: I acquired a used Martin DX1 for $150 cash, including gig bag at a music store in Queens. It has its fair share of nicks, but it's in very good condition overall. Perhaps, the shop owner had no idea what the heck he was selling. Nevertheless, when my wife finally noticed, I told her how much I paid for it. I even showed the receipt to prove it, but she initially claimed that it was fake. She was finally convinced when she called the number on the receipt, and verified the sale with the merchant, while I was at work.

#2: She got mad at me when I arrived home with the free Jasmine from GC, after purchasing ten sets of D'addario EXP strings. This time, she was finally convinced when I showed her the receipt, accompanied with the sale catalog that I took from the store. To alleviate the situation, I told her that she could use the guitar for a prize raffle at the baby shower that she was hosting at that time, to which she did.

*sigh*

I've been married to my second wife for 16 years now. We actually met on stage, but that's another story. The one thing that makes our marriage work is that we keep our finances separate. She uses her money (plus some of mine that I give her every month) to buy whatever she wants, no questions asked. I pay for everything else, including the mortgage, utilities, groceries, all household expenses, etc. We don't pry into each other's spending habits. She has no clue what I buy and how much I pay. She'll walk into the music room, look around, and then make some comment like "there sure is a lot more stuff down here," to which I respond by pointing out and acknowledging a book or something, but completely overlooking the three new guitars, two new neon signs, and a new amp. I even expanded from two to six motorcycles on the sly. As Povation suggested earlier, I'm pretty much insane and I have a very tolerant wife.

My wonderful sweety has been very supportive of my GAS trouble...up to a point. When I went from 1 guitar to 9 in the course of six months, she finally forbade me from logging on to ebay for a while...

Actually, she at one point was encouraging me to get a #47 - SHE actually argued the investment side of things. I opted not to - only to pick up a custom 12-string, country artist and hollowbody Ibanez instead (for combined less money :D ).

The funny thing is that when I bring a new guitar in, she either gives me instant approval or not - my Adamas II, deep-bowl Elite, and Viper have all been referred to in the "you can't ever get rid of that one" category.

And all this after 3 years of marriage! Advice to the boys: BE HONEST AND COMMUNICATE! It is sometimes easier to ask forgiveness than permission, BUT YOU HAVE TO ASK!!!
