This morning at church, I really got to see the face of some of those hurt by hurricane Katrina. At the noon service our church was packed with people standing in just about any place they could find. Our pastor asked if those who were here from New Orleans would stand, and more that half the people stood up.
As I played my guitar, I looked out at the faces of these people. Some were crying, some just had a blank look, and some sang their hearts out. One thing happend to me that really has stayed in my mind. After the service, I was putting my guitar up, when two young girls came up to me. They wanted to see my guitar, and as I showed it to them one said this. "We have no where to go". I looked up and saw their mother crying, and that was one of the hardest things I have ever seen. I felt so helpless, there was nothing I could do for them. Well I gave each of the little girls a guitar pick, and their faces just lit up. At least I could give them that, and their mother told me later that the girls were both doing lots of "air guitar".
It was quite a morning for me talking to so many people who have nothing, and are just trying to find a place to stay. I pray for these people, and for those two little girls and their family. This is such a tragedy, I am just glad that I could offer a little comfort.

Sometimes, the small touches of kindness are the most important. It shows we are civilized.

I like to think that just for that split second those girls forgot about their tragedy and just got caught up in the moment of receiving the pics from the "guitar man". It may be just wishful thinking, but even if it did happen that way for even a 1/10 of a second, then Paul you brought them some light into an otherwise dark day. It really is the little things.. :)

When you no longer have anything, even a little something like a guitar pick gives you something to hang onto, something to "own"...hope...

My wife and I used to live down there, on the West Bank. Started off in Harvey, then Gretna, then out to Marrero. Left there when I joined the Navy after 4 years. I still have one cousin that lived down there. She and her husband lost their new houe, just closed on it at the end of July this year. Painful watching the news. I used to know a lot of people down there, but haven't heard from many of them in over 20 years.

That was a simple, yet very sweet gesture, Paul. It probably did more to brighten those girls' day than you'll ever know this side of heaven. :)
