Can anyone here elaborate on the differences between the pickups used on Breadwinners? I understand that Ovation started with single coils then moved to a humbucking design.

Were there different humbuckers used?

Thanks,

Erik.

That's about it. Early Breadwinners had large single-coil toroidal pickups, the later ones inherited the same mini-humbuckers as were used on the Preacher/Preacher Deluxe and Deacon.

To add to the question, did the early Breadwinner pickups really have a toroidal (doughnut shaped) core or cores? Do they sound similar to the later humbuckers or any other pickups?

The coil was toroidal and sideways at that.

Which pickup is preferred, single coil or humbucker?

I have an oportunity to trade my Magnum IV for a Breadwinner and the guy who has the Breadwinners has two he's willing to part with. He desribes them as:

====================
to describe them, one is white (cream?) with the large pups, the other is black with the small pups. both styles i've read are single coils, even though they look like humbuckers.

they've been stored away but i got them both out and the electronics are all good (the black one needed stronger batteries to play though, can't explain that). i haven't had the covers or pick guards off messing with them. that's why i choose these two. they fall bettween a couple i wouldn't part with, and a couple i've experimented with that i'm sure you wouldn't want.
====================

In later correspondence he provides:

====================
ok the serial #'s

white, e 2059
black, e 5048
====================

Based on his information, I assume the white one has single coils and the black on has humbuckers.

He hasn't provided pics of the guitars yet so I can't comment on their condition. My Magnum bass is in Mint/Near Mint condition with original case and all original paperwork. Considering the current demand for Magnums vs. Breadwinners, what's the worst condition I should expect in a Breadwinner to consider a straight-up trade?

What you're asking is almost impossible to answer on a board like this. Without going out and holding and playing the guitars who can know which guitar is better or worse?

You need to go play them, hold them, and inspect them. Get the one that sounds and looks best to you. Good luck.
