Location: Omaha, NE | I just got a Zoom H2 recorder. Cool stuff! I am very pleased so far.
I tore off a couple of recordings with my Koala this morning. I was playing the Koala through my Digitech Vocalist Live 4 into my Marshall AS50R. I had the Zoom H2 sitting on the floor a couple of feet in front of the amp.
I was using image #2 on the VIP preamp, with the slider set to about 40% wet. The rest of the EQ on the guitar was set flat, as was the EQ on the amp.
I loaded the raw file into Audacity, cropped out this song, and then exported it to MP3 format. I'm going to need to play with the export process, since all the richness of the recording died once I exported it. I'm including a WAV version so you can hear what I mean. BTW...this is my version of Kottke's version of Bach's Jesu, Joy of Man's Desiring.

One thing I learned this morning is that you really need to watch your recording level. After I recorded the Bach piece, I listened to it and thought everything was fine. So (without changing any settings), I tried recording my version of When The Saints Go Marching In (we did this arrangement in church last week on All Saints Day). With the vocals added, there was some pretty ugly clipping in spots, as you will hear.

| Very nice playing, Omaha. The Koala sounds very nice. I see what you mean about the loss of fidelity in going from the wav to mp3. What bitrate and other settings are you using for the export, and what library is doing the conversion (e.g. lame_mp3.dll)?
On the last recording I couldn't tell if it was clipping, or muddiness from the mic. I'm no sound engineer, and I'm not familiar with the H2 recorder, but maybe the mic doesn't have enough dynamic range to cleanly separate the acoustic sounds from the vocals? No matter, they all still sounded great! |

Location: big island | great playing, jeff. i noted you have a marshall acoustic amp too. i have an AS80R i've been using for 10 years. marshall acoustic amps are not popular on this here forum though. :confused: |

I'm starting to get interested in buying something to record with. Are there any stand alone units out there. ie that you don't require any other equipment, just mics and guitar direct into the unit? Sugestions appreciated.

Location: Omaha, NE | The links are direct to MP3 and WAV files on my server. You should be able to right-click on them, save them to your system, and then play them with whatever audio player you have.
The Zoom H2 may be what you are looking for. You don't line-connect it: It has built in microphones. For what I need (which sounds a lot like what you need), it seems to work great. You turn it on, push the button to start recording, and then you forget about it. You can then connect it directly to your PC to upload the file. Couldn't be easier.
Lanaki, I've really started liking that Marshall again. I bought it six or seven years ago. My dealer had a whole ton of them, and so he about gave it away. Back then, I was playing my Adamas 1597 (with the thinline pickup) and it didn't sound too good through the Marshall. But the new Koala sounds great, as does my ES equipped Taylor. Its a perfect practice amp. |

Location: big island | the w597 with OP-50 and the 1537 that i used to own both sounded very good through my marshall. my 1688 (OP-PRO) with the marshall is the cat's meow. i'm still trying to tune in the best sound with the EF75 through it. the AS80R has been invaluable to me in outdoor and indoor smaller venue gigs. i've run a drum machine, acoustic and electric guitars plus a vocal mic through it with great results.
now, the bose L1 (version 2) system is at the top of my wish list. |
