.. and guys too.

Heard on Paul Harvey this noon:
...but for teen age girls, some deadly enemies are lurking. Four... one, two, three, four deadly enemies: tobacco, drugs, alcohol and indoor tanning. New research reveals that indoor ultraviolet radiation is ten times more potent than sunshine. Dramatically increasing the risk of skin cancer. And the pratice of tanning indoors..., how about that... the practice itself is... addictive.

Nurses who set up IVs have a name for that tough piece of hide they have to pierce which has had plenty of sun (or tanning bed). "Farmer Skin". Think about that the next time you feel the urge to use those melanoma machines.

My wife got it the 'honest' way. Working outdoors. Think how much tougher skin will be for the now young ladies exposing themselves to 10 times that amount. Sounds like a silly alternative, but the 'paint on tan' seems the safest alternative.

A friend of my girlfriend is a nurse, and she's told me some horror stories about people who overused tanning beds. I know this sounds like a "Terrance & Phillip" routine, but there was this girl in her 20's who ended up with a serious melanoma in her butt cheeks and literally burnt her ass off.

Just had surgery to have a bad chunk cut out of my shoulder. Too many sunny days as a lifeguard on the beachs of San Diego in my younger days. Sunlamps=NO Sunscreen=YES, YES, YES

Every time I go see the dermatologist to have something else cut out, I see Mercedes symbols flashing in her eyes.

I haven't gone out and really worked at a tan in years. It's not worth it.

Of course, that's why my wife calls me Casper, The Burly Ghost.....

I was in the waiting room of the dermatologist yesterday for several hours as my wife was operated on.

Anybody considering tanning should be required to spend a couple of hours in that waiting room. Seeing the folks come out missing chunks of their hide should be enough to scare anybody into wearing a skisuit all year round.

I have a tanning bed and have used it for years BUT I think that common sense also comes into play.

Having my own bed allows me to tan in small increments and not over do it....but here is my main reasoning.

Before I got the bed, when golf season would roll around and I started playing 5-6 hours in the sun, I would come home burned to a crisp for weeks.

By judiously tanning a little at a time before the season starts, I can go and play in the sun and I do not come home burnt to a crisp.

Maybe not a good or a valid reason but I figure my chances of actually getting cancer this way is far less than the smokers of the world.
