A few newbie questions: Did Ovation ever use Schaller tuners as original equipment on its
guitars? Also, where can the serial number generally be found? Thanks...

Klusons to Grovers to Schallers branded with the Ovation Logo to Schallers with the Schaller logo. For a short time they used Pings on some Standard Balladeers. Currently I am not sure if they are using Schallers or Pings.

Schaller is best. Ovation was the first major company to go to Schaller. Helmut never forgot that. Who knows what they're using now, probably a $$$$$ decision for the price point.

I used to like Grovers but I agree with cwk schallers ARE the best. Grovers are now made overseas and are a disappointment. In fact in comparing some old usa grovers with schallers I have to admit I like the schallers best.

Hey Guys....

Wondering...the thin G on my adamas 12 string (1598) is continually going out of tune...always falling flat. I change my strings frequently, and know proper stringing technique (no overlaps, reverse bends through peghole, etc.), but this baby won't stay tuned for long. Even if I put the guitar down for 1/2 hour unplayed, she's out, and pretty bad.

My best guess is it's the tuner (don't recall off hand what the brand is...grover, schaller, etc). Is there something I can adjust on the machine head, or something else I should check? It doesn't happen on my elite 12 string, and it's bumming me out.

Thanks in advance. You guys are great, and this site is so fantastic! All the best!

You can try tightening the little screw holding the button to the shaft if the machine feels slack compared to the others, but it's more likely to be something else. The string may be hanging-up in the nut. Grind down a little graphite from an HB pencil, rub it into the nut-slot and see if that helps, if it does it's probably worth having someone cut you a new nut, preferably from bone or similar.

i like to use a silicone based grease with teflon for the nut. a miniscule amount does the trick and is clear and invisible, especially on a white nut. if the slots in the nut are too small for the string (characteristic jumping tone while tuning)a little needle file work will help, or pulling the string through the slot with minimum down pressure (you aren't trying to lower the action) is often all it takes.
