I saw Michael Hedges open for Crosby Stills and Nash in about '94. I had never heard of him before that show. I was stunned that someone could be so inventive, distinct, fluent, progressive, astute, prolific, versatile, melodic, and entertaining.

I immediately bought everything of his that I could get my hands on, and was inspired to think differently about how I played, and was inspired to think differently about how I listened to music.

I remember reading about his wreck, and just slumping back in my chair, the very chair I sit in now, and immediately missing him, for all that he was, and all that was to yet to come. He seemed to be a sweet, intelligent, gentle soul.

Hedges was one of those players that I could really appreciate his style and technique but none of his music knocked me out enough to want to go out and buy any of his music.

I am absolutely convinced the man had talent and was a great player but I was just never taken by his work.

I guess Yngwie Malsteen has the same effect on me. His technique is great but I think his music is less than memorable and in fact laughable at times.

There are several guitar players I put in that category Al with "Yngwie Malsteen." I like Steve Via a bit more, but mostly for HOW he does what he does than the actual material. Listening to a Vai CD, requires a mood, but I can "watch" him play anytime (videos, NAMM etc..)
Buck Dharma I can listen to all day, and also Randy Rhodes... Joe Satriani I have no patience for. Steve Stevens is fun to watch also, but not-so-much into the material. Even Roy Clark was more fun to watch and listen then just listen for me.

enjoyed the feedback. I'm not a purist, nor am I literate in these issues, so I'm not qualified to render any critical analysis as some of you gentlemen. I have to go with intermetro on this. Hey, is Randy Rhodes a Texas boy? Something very familiar there.
Blessings, KD
