I've just bought my second Ovation acoustic/electri guitar. I found a used Model 1639 Tobacco Sunburst in a local music store and fell in love all over again... The guitar is definately an Ovation but I can find no record or correspondence on the Ovation site (or this site) regarding this model number. The guitar is definately an Ovation product. The guitar is at least 15 years old and I belive it has a synthetic neck, anything else I am unsure of. Can anyone enlighten me as to the background of this model number??? Thanks in advance

I don't recognise that model number but if it has a foam neck it's either a Medallion/Matrix, Balladeer Special or an early Ultra. If it has a rosewood board on a foam neck it's a Balladeer special or Ultra, if it has a black plastic molded headstock it's a Matrix. Use the search function on those model names for more info and post a pic

I believe this is a Balladeer Special ... USA made in the early 80's with the urelite neck.

Boy, I went thru every catalog and price sheet that I had and didn't find that model number. However, it's very similar to the Matrix model numbers. Might be one of those.

I don't think Ovation ever made a Balladeer Special with a urelite neck.

Paul, the USA Ultras were called Balladeer Specials (or Special Balladeers, I don't remember which) for a short time.

Paul, it was called that for such a short time it may not have appeared in any catalogs, I don't have it in any of mine either. As far as I remember The Balladeer Special replaced the later rosewood 'board Matrix & was renamed Ultra pretty quickly.

Now I've got to go thru all my old literature to see what I can find. Oh well. There are worse ways to spend an evening.
