| WHAT ARE THE DIFFERENCES IN THE 1687 ADAMAS'S FROM THE 70'S , 80'S & 90'S ? DOES ONE SEEM TO BE PREFERED OVER THE OTHERS? WHEN DID THE ELECTRONICS CHANGE, AND THE TOPS CHANGE ? ANY OTHER DIFFERENCES CONCERNING THE PLAYABILITY OR SOUND? THANKS BY THE WAY, MY '79 1687 IS DUE TO ARRIVE TOMORROW. I WANT TO KNOW A SMUCH ABOUT THIS GUITAR AS POSSIBLE!!!! |

They were all built in different decades. |

Location: SoCal | I think what the others are trying to say is that there has been little change, other than pre-amp.
The early two-knobbers appeal to some, yet others want the newer pre-amps for performing/recording.
I have compared a 1978 to my 1987 #1687, OP-24; as I understand it, my 2003 #1688 12-str, OP-50 would compare favorably with an earlier model. From what I understand, it is near impossible to repair or replace the earlier electronics.
In the ? mid 80's, there was a period when the headstock was not carved wood but a pressed foam...they have a shinier appearance than the wood. After finding another source for the headstocks, the factory went back to wood. |

The biggest changes over time have been reduction in manufacturing costs. This resulted in going away from the gold speckled bowls, then reducing and finally eliminating the gold speckling in the tops. Bracing went from hand picked/matched to normal machined. Fretboard went to ebony instead of walnut. Cheaper epaulets. Tops went from two shade fade to solid color, etc. But the heart and soul or Adamas - the sound - remains pretty much as it was designed to be. |

Location: SoCal | I'm just jealous...something about the early "wood knobbers." Mine's a 1987. :(
Enjoy ;) |
