Location: Phoenix AZ | Somebody smart please explain this to me because I can't figure it out. What's different on the XLR/Phantom power of older (Optima) preamps vs newer (Op-series).
I have a mixer with phantom power and if I connect by XLR to an older OPTIMA equipped guitar everything works just fine. However with the exact same setup if I plug into a modern OP-series equipped guitar the same XLR connection will only work if there is also a dummy 1/4 plug also inserted.
Why is this ??? |

Location: closely held secret | Dave, I believe the Optimas did not require that pin 1 be strapped to the shell. I know my 1581 works on any XLR cable with phantom, while my 6758LX and LAVKoa are picky about the cable (not all XLR cables have pin 1 to shell).
I'm guessing they changed the PCB on which the jacks are mounted on when they went to the OP series. |

I have a hard time understanding why they are even a problem in the first place (from the design/ manufacturing side)
Is it lowest common denominator? |

Location: closely held secret | Seems that way to me, too. I suppose there are circumstances we aren't aware of.
...at least, I'd rather believe that than the alternative - it was just poor design... |

I've emptied by chamber on the whole dummy plug issue elsewhere. In my house (where I play 99% of the time) I would never ever in a million years use the ovation tuners because it's just a huge pain in the ass. I plug right into a nice korg rack mount tuner. If I was playing out live I guess I'd be plugged in so it wouldn't be an issue. But it's DUMB, DUMB, DUMB.
How the hell did Takamine figure out how to do it so well on the CoolTube-2. No plug in needed and a nice tuner button that cycles you between OFF-Tune with P/A active-Tune with P/A muted. How friggin hard is that ???
