Last night BrianT and I played our fifth Huber-Breese Folkin' Friday open mic. We are learning something new each time.
There was a special "pro" guest last night. A fella named Cliff Erickson. He has opened for Ringo Starr, Kenny Rogers, The Beach Boys and Jim Carey. And either he played with or opened for Glen Campbell. I'm not sure.
Anyway....this guy is an Ovation activist. He uses a slothead 12 string Balladeer that he has had since 1976. It even has the beginnings of a Willie Nelson type hole in the top. He did a couple songs of his own, then the store owner (Paul Huber) came up to join him. Paul picked up a Taylor and had some difficulty getting it in tune. Cliff made some comments like.."What's the matter Paul? Having problem with that Taylor?" Paul then took the opportunity to give an Ovation sales pitch. He talked to the crowd about how Ovation necks stay put, about the new contour bowl that's coming out and the new LX neck system. In this Taylor/Martin/Gibson world it was nice to see Ovation promoted by a dealer and a pro. And I have it all on video tape.

I'm going to send a copy to Paul. He said he would forward it to Miles.

That would be cool. They are alway interesting.
We still have the Acoustic Jam night going at the Now & Zen Cafe. Also, BrianT and myself are starting to talk about hosting a jam party when the weather gets better.

Not an "Open Mic", but . . .

Saturday night I went down to one of the local places that I play that was celebrating their third anniversary (and the owner's 30th birthday). Technically, it was another guy's "gig", but he and the owner worked it out that other people would be stopping by, coming up, and/or sitting in.

This one guy who I'd never seen before comes up with a S/S bowl Ovation with a satin finish top and a rather austere circular rosette. I'm assuming it was a newer Balladeer. The guy (Rob) was good! He did an acoustic-reggae version of Ozzie's "Crazy Train". Kinda like Jack Johnson playin' Ozzie. Had me in stitches. I later met him up by the bar, and asked which Ovation he had, and was it a Balldeer. Said he didn't remember, but the only things that he "knew" was that he bought it about three years ago, it's a USA model, and he paid "close to a Grand"(?) for it.

Later on, when I went up with my CBalladeer, he came running up and was marveling at the top and the finish. He asked me how much I'd paid for it, and I told him $350. He almost fell over in shock. I then had to back that up with that we're talking about "NineteenSeventySix" Dollars . . .

When I told him about the OFC and the Tour/Jam, his face lit up, so I'm thinkin' we'll be seeing "Rob" 'round these here parts soon . . .
