Location: NW Indiana | I just picked up a used 1866 Legend 12-string. Looks and sounds wonderful (at the top end of the neck)....but the action is about 1/4" at the 12th fret. And all the shims are missing. What can be done? Thanks. |

Location: NW Indiana | Yes, the neck looks straight, bridge is flat to the soundboard, and it sounds great when played up to the 5th fret or so. |

Location: Boise, Idaho | You have to check these with a long straight edge. I like a 2 by 3 feet square. I use the 2 foot side to move around on the frets and see if there is a valley or a mound. Sometimes the 12th fret will be high and the 2 foot side will rock over that fret. The 3 foot side should sit flat on all the frets and line up with the top of the bridge, ideally. If the straight edge sits flat on the frets or the frets are only very slightly mounded (I can never remember which is "bowed" and which is "warped", but the straight edge hits below the top of the bridge, you will need a neck reset. If you use the 3 foot side and it sits on the bridge and the first fret, but sits high above the 12th frets and up, same thing, you need a neck reset. |

Location: Germany, where delicious wine is growing (Rheinh) | Hi, loosen the strings and check whether the neck has come loose to the Body. There is a bolt inside the Body were the neck joins the Body. It's a shallow bowl, so it has only one bolt, all others have two.
I had the same issue on my 5858 Elite and this was the Problem.
