Richie Havens died of a heart attack today. He was 72. I am truly saddened by this news. His Woodstock performance was so inspiring. Thanks for the music Richie...you will be missed...R.I.P.

I met Richie Havens years ago when I worked for a music distributor (records, tapes and cd's ). He was a really nice mellow guy. We talked about his singing on the Steve Hackett album "Please don't Touch" which is great and was by that time a bit obscure. And he had time to talk to a grunt. It's the only time I've asked for a autograph. Sorry to hear he is no longer here, he had a great voice.

I rememeber he had the longest thumb. When he was playing open he would just use that thumb. THAT was Richie. Almost a trademark. He will be missed.

He actually has a neat tutorial on his website to share how anyone could play like him:

Sure...tune to E and strum like hell. I always said, to get a kid started on guitar, do that. You can play a thousand songs doing that. After you've peaked their interest, some 'em the correct way.
