I've got an early 80s 1617 Legend. It has held up through the years and does what I need. I had all but retired it from shows after buying a Line 6 Variax 600, but the Variax has recently contracted some sort of illness and must go in for repair.

I play in two bands (and anyone else that needs help). In one, I play very little acoustic; just one or two tunes. In the other band, I play 4 or 5 tunes on the acoustic. Previously, I plugged the Variax A/B power supply switch acoustic channel into an MXR 10 band EQ, then into a Behringer 1602 mixer (I also run a Roland GR-30 synth and a Shure 520 harp mic through a Line 6 Pocket POD). That then goes directly to the board, and into a Peavey KB2 keyboard amp for ambient sound (no one wants me in their monitor mix). That set up worked well until the Variax died. Now with the Ovation, I end up bypassing the whole mess and just running it through my Blues Jr clean. It has a little bit of break up but does better than the other method. I was getting way too boomy or tinny sound no matter what.

Now I'm contemplating getting a preamp or DI to run into the Behringer and to the board. The LR Baggs Para DI was suggested to my at a local Guitar Center. For just a few tunes, the price is a bit steep. I then found the Behringer ADI21. To me that would do what I want, but I don't want to spend the bucks if I'd end up getting the LR Baggs any way. Whatever I get will sit in my rack and be plugged into the Behringer mixer, not direct to the board. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanx

L

I wouldn't bother with the ADI21, but just get a standard DI like the Ultra-DI 100

Been using these for years for acoustic guitar, bass, keyboards, whatever...   I have several of them, and never leave home without them if I'm running sound.

I didn't explain it correctly. I have two signals in my rig; one for my electric guitars to the board via a Sennheiser 609, and one for guitar synth/harp/acoustic guitar to the board via a Whirlwind Director and also to a Peavey KB2. I want something to make the 1617 sound better BEFORE it gets to the mixer and is sent to the board. The FOH mixer doesn't have enough channels for me to have another channel strictly for guitar.

Oh I see. You want a pre-amp for your acoustic guitar where it goes into YOUR submixer. Yes that's not what I was thinking. Other than a little EQ here'n there I've never had to make an Ovation preamp sound "better" so I'm not sure what you are looking for and that would help.

I would start with... if you were to just plug a set of headsets into your mixer, how does the acoustic sound? Then I would plug your mixer into a an amp and check how the acoustic sounds. If that's all good... then the problem is "after" your mixer. If you don't like what it sounds like in the mixer, next stop... plug guitar into amp... and with the eq flat.. see what it sounds like.

Ultimately while doing the little tests, listen for what's missing or what needs to be taken away. Some people like effects like Chorus and Reverb, but I don't usually do those on the sub-mix. A Rockman Acoustic Guitar pedal is an amazing effect. Your guitar will sound huge, but it has a completely different texture. A tube pre-amp would just warm up the signal a bit. etc etc..

As I said... in general Ovation pre-amps shine because you don't have to do anything to them other than a little EQ. Not even sure you need the direct box onto the sub-mix, although sometimes one is needed..

On you next response, I'll move this thread into the general forums so more folks can comment.

I use a Roland AC60 pre-mixer. But you didn't ask for a full amp. You can accomplish the same with the Boss (owned by Roland) AD-3 or AD-8.

True, I don't really need anything, but I don't like the sound. I have to roll all the bass off to make it not be boomy and feedback. The MXR 10 band EQ just doesn't do enough to leave it in the mix. I have a Blues Jr. for my electric signal. The last time I played, I couldn't get the sound I liked through the submixer>keyboard amp route, so I just plugged it up to the BJ with my wireless. I run the BJ clean with all tone controls at 12 o'clock. It sounded better, but not great. It's been over a year since I changed the battery, but I've only used it once for about 4 hours. The remainder of the time it's been sitting in a stand beside my chair in the living room. It'll be a month or so before I need to try it again. I have some downtime the last two weeks of this month. I'll try messing with it again at performance levels.

ding ding ding... we have a winner. While some have had their mileage vary, I've never had a batter last more than a month.
