Nope, The Stray Cats had nothing to do with it, nor did Dave Edmund's write it. It was written by Hank Devito and recorded by Edmunds band "Rockpile" around 1978 maybe, and that's the band on the youtube clip. Rockplile was Edmunds, drummer Terry Willams
(later to join Dire Straits
) Billy Bremner on guitar
(The Pretenders, Elvis Costello, Pat McLaugnlin
) and Nick Lowe on bass. Rockpile were at the time the best bar-band in the world
(That crown has since passed to Webb Wilder
) Nick is one of the finest songwriters on the planet, and many of us over here consider him a national treaure.
Many years ago when I was involved in our local branch of the Musicians Union we organised a clinic with Terry Williams who was then at his peak with Dire Straits. Now with all due respect, Terry comes from the Ringo Starr school of drumming. Some jazz-fusion guy was not impressed and during the question and answer session said "I notice that your style is not particularly technical" To which Williams said something like "Maybe not, but I own a farm, 2 houses, a Porsche, a Ferrari and have more money than I can possibly spend in my lifetime" Kinda put it into perspective for him.
