OK, so how come more manufacturers don't use a zero fret? It would seem to me to be a much more stable way to anchor that end of the fret board. What are the pros and cons? Any thoughts?

Because they suck.
Real guitars have a nut.
Cheapies just run out all the frets and then have a spacer up at the end of the neck.
But what do I know, I just used to sell jet fuel........
