I'm curious to know the essential differences between the Legend and the Custom Legend, and the Elite and the Custom Elite. One has AA grade spruce and the other AAA grade; but what does that really add up to? I've heard that spruce grades depend on cosmetic appeal rather than superior sound potential. Are the differences mainly in terms of bling?

Bling - CL has abalone purfling, dot-and-diamond abalone fret markers, a carved bridge, abalone rosette, and depending on the year, a carved truss rod cover. The essentials of the guitar are the same.

Both have a bound fretboard.

In the 1970's, it was a matter of trim and bracing, the CL having an A braced top, the Legend's was VT braced.

From about 1980 on, the only difference was trim....
