Location: Geneseo Illinois (The Sticks) | I did an acoustic act with a violin player around Chicago in the early and mid 80's. On a Friday night without a gig we decided to just stop by and play for fun at a local watering hole.
After an hour or so of playing and drinking we broke into our version of Blackfoots' Train Train. I was seated on one of those tall round top vinyl padded bar stools. I made it to the jam at the end when; Oh my god my O started to slip away from me(no strap DUH) first turning so I could see the sound hole...then sliding down my lap heading for the floor. I went with it,sliding off the stool, to the floor, on my knees, guitar in lap, never missing a lick, never even looking up. Everyone, including my partner thought I was caughtup in the moment, the ecstasy of the jam....
If they only knew.....
I never let on and I didn't have to pay for a beer for the rest of the night. |

Location: Central Illinois | 'Vation's Bane strikes again! I had similar slippage at my very first public gig. My only stage request was for an amrless chair. When I get there I see a tall stool with NO PLACE TO PROP MY FEET. Might as well have tried to play standing up. I was tying to stumble my way through Kottke's "The Fisherman" and not lose my Elite in the process. And then, in the middle of the most difficult part, a 'friend' walks up to the stage and tries to strike up a conversation! "Hi Dave! I didn't know you played guitar! What song is that?!"
My response with sweating brow and gritted teeth: "Can't ...... Talk ....."
What a nightmare. I was hooked and back for more the next week. :)
