Location: Atlanta,Ga. | The five point bridge was around until late 1968 to early 1969.They were advertized as Brazilian rosewood bridges.....Then they used for a short time the second generation bridge which was very thin on the wings. That lasted from 1969 to 1970ish.That was also the end of the small white paper labels..The the third generation bridge was phased in around 1970,-1971 and is still used today....They also started using the oval foil labels at that time... |

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | Sam, you have a lot of old acoustics...what is the best way to keep one crack-free? In the case with a humidifier, or out of the case, what?

Location: Nova Scotia, Canada | Also, is it true that five sided bridges contribute to cracking? I've seen lots of guitars crack with the newer type bridge as well.

Location: Atlanta,Ga. | Wayne, i dont believe the five point bridge had anything to do with top cracks.Ovation tops cracked with all three bridges.I feel that low humidity and other factors(bracing)contributed to top cracks..I have always felt that ovations were prone to more top cracks than other guitars due to wood expansion and contraction and non expansion and contraction of the bowls..That along with certain bracing patterns, low humidity caused top cracks "in my opinion"...
If you look at other guitars(martins, gibson, etc.)they have top crack as well..It may be that when you slice a piece of wood 1/8" thick for a top,you are going to develope or find a weakness in it.. |

Location: 6 String Ranch | Sam you're basically right but the 5 points add srtress raisors that also cause cracks. All the other stuff is true about bad bracing and too much expansion within bounds. It's got to go somewhere?? it's times like these that metal is wonderful |
