Joined: July 2002 Posts: 3 | i just purchased a deacon from ebay. i recv'd it a few days ago and i am very happy w/ it. it is completely in it's original state and has no mods. it is not only a beautiful guitar, but it sounds great too. i do want to make some mods of my own though to pimp out the deac. one thing i wanted to do was replace the bridge. i've got one bridge in mind that would be great, but it's one of those top mount jobs. i read they fit right into deacons, but will the slight cavity in the body make a difference? also i'm thinking of going all chrome since the pu covers are chrome. but are those covers removable from the pu. if they are i might gold dip them and go w/ gold hardware. any suggestions (about anything)? i'll also try to post pics at the various stages of my project. thanks

I did it on my Viper (same bridge) because I wanted a Kahler trm. I had to fill the cavity, sand it flush, then jig for the bridge. Oh yeah... and make sure you get the intonation right too. Frankly you have a classic guitar that is probably worth 2 x 3 times what you just paid on eBay (prices on eBay have been good for buying these days). I would try to find a basically already trashed or at modified Deacon or Breadwinner and do your project on that. Save the "all original" as an investment.

Joined: December 2001 Posts: 7236 Location: The Great Pacific Northwest | There are basically two models that folks confuse all the time (actually there's three, but we won't go there now..) The Breadwinner and the Deacon. The "basic" visual difference is the Deacon was "finished" or "Stained" and the Breadwinner was painted (black, white, tan or blue). The Deacon also has the nicer brass tuners. If you search the messages you will find all of the details. But.. in any case.. Breadwinners and Deacons, when the market is good bring a couple hundred more than what you paid, and I have seen them much higher. Summer is slow. Check the prices on gBase or TheGuitarList.com. At $400, with a case, in good condition... you got a deal. As cwk2 also pointed out.. there are plenty of ragged out Breadwinners and Deacons that you could get for a project for a couple hundred or less.

Joined: July 2002 Posts: 3 | thanks for the replies. i'm most likely going to stick w/ the original stuff. it's hard to disagree w/ you guys (plus not buying a bridge will save me some $). i was playing my buddies 2001 gibson les paul studio ($1100) today and the deac sounded just as good so i figured "if it ain't broke don't fix it." i also want to note that imho the deacon felt better to play than the LP. the neck on the deacon is awesome. thanks again. oh yeah, whats the third one you speak of?
