Whats the go with Ovations made in Korea? Are they the same company as Kaman Ct. Are they worth purchasing or not?

Cheers

I have a Korean Celebrity and a US Balladeer... Other than the fancy shmancy mother of pearl all round the edges, I found the quality on both guitars really good. Both sounded great too. I actually play my Celebrity (before her finish crack, God rest her soul) a lot more than the Balladeer and that's probably why she's got a crack in her finish now. Anyhow, that's my opinion

Let's not confuse country of origin with broad generalities about product quality. In my opinion the Korean made Ovations are inferior to the US made ones. Bt it is NOT because they are made in Korea. It's just because they are lower models in the product line. If ALL ovations were made in the US, I would still have the opinion that a celebrity is inferior to a legend. Same thing if all the models were made in Korea. In my opinion, given the pricepoint of the celebrity models, I think they are made just fine and if that is the look, sound and feel you desire then the celebrity would be a fine choice. If you are looking at a higher pricepoint and desire the features, sound, finih quality of a US model, that's great. It all depends on what you want or require (or can afford) and just like most things in life, you generally get what you pay for. Having said that, I might add that buying used guitars has never been easier, given the advent of on-line auctions, etc. So if you are looking at a celebrity-type pricepoint (say $400-500), you can probably find a nice used US model on-line for the same money - if that's what you desire. Actually having lived in South Korea for over a year I must say most Korean products are made inferior. I do admit they have made great strides since the late 80's after the '88 Olympics where the media finally declared they had finally risen from the ashes of being a third world country but when I started looking for an Ovation I purchased one that was U.S. made, because IMHO they are made with better quality.

StandingOvation,
You nailed it on the head with "It's just because they are lower models in the product line." Spent some time in Korea myself and they build what they are paid to build. Ricker, I suggest you get hold of some local musicians and have them take you to a local guitar company. Although they don't have anything like the Ovation there (that I know of), the quality of work on the guitars that are not "built to a low pricepoint" is quite outstanding. They also have access to better and more exotic woods at cheaper prices than we do in the US.

They are not bad for plugged-in live performance. Workmanship seems fine for the price you pay. Veneer vs solid wood top. It depends what you want/need & how much you want to pay.

We cannot blame Korea for anything we don't like.
Ovation is damn smart to make guitars in Korea, where labor & material costs are MUCH lower than that in the US. Remember the Asian financial crisis several years ago? Korea went bankrupt. Things were dirt cheap. Ovation made tons of $$$.
