Location: Netherlands | Hi all, I hope you can help.
I own a Korean Ultra 1528 which I dated back to '92 or '93.
Yesterday i noticed distortion while playing the low strings amplified (E and A). It sounds like dust somewhere or maybe a blown preamp causing clipping.
It cost me half an afternoon to find out it must have something to do with pickup or the FET amp in my Ultra, and not with my tube poweramp or Boss processor.
I've cleaned the pot (stacked volume/tone)with contact cleaner spray, but it doesn't seem to make a difference.
Of course, guarantee has expired, so i'm stuck with my ultra.
Has anyone had similar problems with the FET amp? And are they easily replaceable, and what would a replacement unit cost??? And could the pickup be the problem? (I don't think so).
Thnx

I had the same problem a few weeks ago with my Legend and asked the board for help. I changed my battery first as well. Turns out I had replaced a weak battery with a weak battery. A fresh Duracell did the trick. |

Location: Netherlands | The Duracell i put in came fresh out of the pack and has an expiration date somewhere in 2007, so i reckon it's not the problem, but i'll try another one.
Thnx.

Location: Scotland | It's not the pickup. Probably component failure in the pre. it's a pretty simple circuit, any competent engineer should be able to sort it. |

Paul, based on your reply i decided to open the preamp myself. You were right, it's only a small print with some components on it. I resoldered them all and cleant the pot, the trimpot and the jacks with cleaner, tightened all bolts and there it is:
fixed. It probably was some dust or a loose connection only audible with big resonance (E and A strings).
