I picked up a gently used (almost mint) Celebrity CE 48 Shallow Bowl. I noticed the high e string has only about half the volume of the b string. I slacked the strings and found two shims. It seemed odd that the shims did not fill the bridge channel. I lightly sanded both with 800 grit to get rid of a slightly grainy feel. I checked the metal channel the saddle rests on, and saddle, pickup, pickup channel and bridge route all liiked clean, and ok. I reinstalled the shims touching the trele edge of the bridge channel to make sure there is no void. Still, there is a volume discrepancy. The shims are necessary to prevent buzzing.

Is this common. Have I missed anything? Am I making too much out of this?

Thank you in advance for your help.

I assume that this is without amplifying the instrument. What gauges of strings are you using on the 1st and 2nd? Do the shims fully support the saddle under the strings? Do the shims and saddle all lie flat against the bridge channel without rocking side to side? Is there a big difference in break angle on the 1st and second strings?

Especially for the excitation of the piezo pickup a good even contact in full length of the pickup is important.
Happy NGD.

Don't forget the check for discrepancies on the other end of the string... at the nut.

To all who have responded, thank you. Everything passes muster except i need to carefully check the nut, although I have to say that when struck, it does ring clear.
