Hi Guys (and Gals:)

Who ever had my 1759 Custom Legend 12 Str before me aparently lowered the action by filing down the string channels in the nut. The action is extremely low, and for someone wishing to do a lot of quiet finger-picking, it probably worked fine. My problem is that it is too low for any serious strummin action (string buzz). I am planning to put another nut on it and replace a shim or two, to get the volume back to what it should be, then I'll tweek it from there. NOW ... WITH THAT SAID ... I have HEARD from a couple different people that some artists have switched the bass strings around to bring out more bottom end. Kim at the factory emailed me and mentioned Rickenbacher in one comment. I'd kinda like to try that and see how it works. Kim said it would require a custom-cut nut. Does anyone here have any knowledge or experience in doing this? If so, I'd like your opinion on the results.

THANKS!

I tried it. I got a 12 string nut from Mother and since the grooves are superficial I was able to file out for Reverse Strung.

If you have the multi-sizes files its easy.

I went back standard.

I've got one of Bill's 12-strings (an Adamas LongNeck) that's strung that way (Ric-style). It DOES take some getting "used to" (especially if you're very accustomed to playing a regular 12).

Being that the regular nut was still in the case, Bill gave me the option of switching them out, but I decided not to be a girlie man and just suck it up and learn to "adapt".
Now, I LOVE it!!!
Playing this thing is like playing a baby grand strapped to your chest!! I don't think that I would switch my primary 12 over to this, but it's a really nice alternative sound. On some of the songs that I use this thing on, it just "stonks" . . .

I tried reverse strung once. I won't try it again. Like Woody I went back to standard.

The trick is making sure that you hit the strings hard enough to get both of them. With the reverse the octive is kinda hiding in the shadow of the big string and with a light touch it's easy to miss. With a regular 12 even with a light touch you hit the octive first and fall into the big string.
I don't really have a preference, I hardly ever play 12 string.

What exactly did you guys not like about the reverse stringing? Was it the feel or the sound? I know it would take some precision to line up the thinner strings behind the thick ones, or they wouldn't sound out correctly. And then there's the idea of getting them corectly arched with the fretboard. It seems like it would take a while to do it right. Kim said it would take up to an hour and a half of labor to have one custom cut at the factory. He's going to send a standard cut nut and a blank so I can experiment. Those guys are so cool at the factory.
