I picked up a beautiful Adamas W591 really cheap. The former owner, for some reason, pulled out the electronics so I want to replace them. But this question concerns the pickup. Although the preamp is gone, there is a working pickup installed and I want to know if it is the original. The saddle is just a regular bone one and when I put new strings on and pulled it out there was no pickup under it. There is a hole drilled through into the body, but I thought that maybe they are predrilled. I reached through the soundhole and there seems to be some kind of soundboard pickup installed. Could this be the original or not? I can't find anything on the Ovation site that talks abouth their pickup configurations.

A pic would help, but it sounds like they changed the pickup. The hole under the saddle is pre-drilled so they just pulled everything out and put in what they preferred. Is there a preamp of some kind in the guitar, or is it a passive p/u? What pickup is it? Is there a rectangular hole where the preamp used to be, or is it the kidney-shaped hole?

Welcome Greg!

John is onto the preamp portion of this puzzle. This guitar probably came with the OP50 preamp in it (kidney shape) from the factory. These can be found on Ebay occasionally. I don't know how much Ovation gets for them.

Unfortunately I cannot shed any light on the pickup. But trust me when I tell you that someone on this board knows.

Best of luck figuring this one out. Enjoy your Adamas!

Todd

Guys - this guitar has the openings for a battery box and the Optima preamp w/ xlr. The opening is not kidney shaped. I think this w591 was built in 2000. I wish is was the OP50. It would be easier to get one. The installed soundboard pickup is passive and a friend thinks it may be an I-Beam. The pickup was probably that saddle deal that most Adamas' have as the saddle slot is wide and now has a massive bone job in it that was extrememly well done.

I was thinking W597, not W591--sorry.

The Optima preamp works very well in mine. I've only plugged it in a handful of times, but I like it. Onboard tuner is nice, too.
