my questions focus on the model called the Ovation 'Hurricane' late 60s.

1. was this model a twelve string only or were there 6 string Hurricanes?

2. If so, is it truly a Thunderhead with everthing else being the same..such as pickups, tuners(-6), pickguard, knobs, etc.

any differences twixt the Hurricane and thunderhead would be helpful in my interest on this topic. I am relying only on info from the blue book of electric guitars.

3. Is there a book on the history of Ovations similar to what there exists with Fender and Gibson.

thanks,
t

The Hurricane was 12-string only.

It was basically a 12-string version of the Tornado.

It came in two nut widths:
1) hard to play and
2) totally unplayable.

Check out the Ovation history book recently up in the "For Sale" section. Hard to find.

Oh really. In what ways was it cumbersome? Did any of the other electric storm guitars suffer from similar issues?

Not in my opinion, but that's not a good comparison. The others were 6 string models.

My Tornado is a joy to play.

The Hurricane has different pick-ups, an unbound rosewood neck compared to the bound ebony neck on the T-Head, dot markers instead of double diamonds, and chrome hardware instead of gold on the T-Head. The unplayable nature raised by Mitzdawg is the fact that its neck is a standard 1-11/16" width which, for a 12 string, makes it very tight to play. Here are photos of each.

The T-Head in the photo above had a non-stock tailpiece. I have since changed it out to the original factory gold-colored model that matches the design of the chrome piece on the Hurricane.
