Location: new jersey | Can anyone help me resolve this problem. When I am playing live and I tap on the body of the guitar I get loud pops and crackles through the PA. I am guessing the input is worn. Does anyone know where I can get a new input or do I have to get a preamp too. Thanks for your help!! |

Location: Utah | Sure sounds like a loose connection somewhere, or a bad connection that has oxidized. Try a systematic exploration from one end of the signal chain to the other.
I'd start with the easy things first. Swap out cables from the guitar to amp. Swap out the preamp battery. While you're in there, wiggle each wire on the battery clip at the battery end and at the preamp end.
Then I'd go inside and wiggle the wire at the saddle pickup end, then where it goes into the preamp. If it has a plug on it, unplug it and plug it back in a few times in case there is oxidation on the contacts. (turn down the volume all the way before plugging/unplugging). Then wiggle the wire from the output of the preamp and where it goes into the 1/4" jack on the body of the guitar. Might as well look to be sure there aren't any kinks in the internal wiring which may have caused an actual break inside the wiring.
If the Op-X is easily removable, pull it out and pop it back in. Maybe it is a bad connection between preamp and receptacle.
If none of that isolates the problem then it seems you are looking at either the pickup itself or the preamp electronics having a bad connection internally.

Location: Corpus Christi, TX | The first thing I would check is the 1/4" jack socket - the contacts could have lost some of their spring and are losing contact. Just wiggle the plug at the guitar, you'll know if thats the culprit |

Location: new jersey | Thanks....It is the output jack. Last night at rehearsal it sounded like the fourth of July any time I touched the cable. Can I just get an output jack (optima jack)or do I need the whole setup...I have a show Friday and I am in need...Thank you!! |

| It's just a standard 1/4" jack. You can replace it yourself if you're handy with a soldering iron. Any fair-sized guitar store should have them for sale. Before you go that route, though, try bending the contacts inward a bit, they may have just spread outward with use and aren't contacting the plug well. |

Location: Largo, Florida | I had the same problem on one of my long unplayed guitars (it had been in its case for about 10 years). You could try your local Radio Shack and pick up a can of "Control/Contact Cleaner and Lubricant" spray. I sprayed a burst onto the jack plug and inserted it into the guitar socket a few times, turning the plug as I did so - cleaned it right up and no more unwanted sound effects. I also took it apart and gave the pickup selector switch and the pots a brief spray - very effective. |
