What is the difference between the 8158 molded case and the 9158 deluxe molded case. I see the logo on the front is different and the 9158 has the Ovation name printed on the inside plush, but their must be some other differences.

A more heavy duty handle on the 9158...and about $50 retail depending on where you buy it.

Some 9158's have a softer handle. But not all of them.
And some have a place to put the truss-rod wrench.

But mostly, it is the "Ovation" in the fur...

Wow! I'm surprized. No difference in the fur, the padding, locks, etc.. Just the handle and name logo. For the extra money I thought the deluxe might be stronger or have better features then the standard case.

Maybe if you're 6'5" and weigh 250 pounds you won't feel the difference in the two cases, but, at 5'5' and less than 140 pounds, the differences are pronounced. There's a very big difference in how balanced they feel when they're being toted--when you're petite like me, the 8158s don't snug up next to you, and are much more cumbersome.
The deluxes are much trimmer, inch-wise. The first cases I measured contain super-shallow bowls. The deluxe bowl-end has a footprint that is 5 1/2 inches; the other is 7 inches. The thickest point on the deluxe is about 7 3/4 inches; the other is 8 1/4. The "feet" used to rest the cases on are very different--I've never seen them missing or pushed in on the better cases, but have noticed that on the cheaper ones.
I just measured Gertrude's case (she's original deep bowl), and that deluxe is still much slimmer than the 8158, even though she's so much bigger.
There's a lot more to the differences than just the writing in the cases--the measuring tape proves it.

The harder the material and stronger the case, the bigger the dent, rip or scratch in or on whatever they bang into, which is why I prefer the vinyl-covered hard-foam cases. For everyday use to and from gigs, they hold up well, save upholstery and door jams, and can be carried on a shoulder, leaving your hands for the other gear and doors.
