I have an old ovation guitar with a three digit serial number (no prefix) hand written in BLACK ink. I have only seen reference to these numbers written in RED ink. Does anyone know anyting about this and possibly what year it is? Dave

I think it means that the guitar (a Huricane 12 string?) is old as dirt and not worth much. Better just send it to me and be rid of it.

Seriously, that would indicate a very early guitar, 1967 or 1968? Something to be held on to.

The earliest ones had the numbers stamped in the neck block. Often they were drawn over in black ink to make them more visable. This is an early acoustic, shiney bowl, right?

Paul, are you looking for a Hurricane? I know of a red one that could become available sometime in the future.

Bill, I'm up in the air on a Huricane. I suspect that my next guitar will be a blonde Thunderhead (sans tremlo) like the one Miles bought on ebay (FROM JUST UP THE FREEWAY FROM ME!) a while back. Then I'd be looking for an electric 12 string.

I'm getting close to being done with my Viper project. I'm wiring in an Ovation humbucking pickup in the neck position tonight and bolting on the Preacher Deluxe neck. Then is goes in to have the nut put on the the frets polished. Then it's just adjustment of the bridge. Oh boy, oh boy oh boy! When it gets done, I'll have Miles post a picture and everybody can get pissed at me for messing with a future collectable.

Now, if you want to offer me your Elite prototype... Oh hell, you'd actually want money for it. Or do you need the services of a world class investigator?

No, this isn't an acoustic. It's a Hurricane 12-string. Just 3 numbers hand written in black ink. The number is also stamped into the neck under the plate that covers the screws that attach it to the body. I was just curious because I had never seen a reference to 3 digit black serial numbers. Dave

As stated above, this is an early Hurricane 12-String from the "Storm Series" guitars. The only problem with many of them these days is that very few have lasted. They were good guitars that were played in most cases. Finding one in good condition is tuff. I find the storm series VERY hard to figure value. I've bought and sold them , and seen others buy and sell them over the past few years in prices that spanned from undr $200 to over $800 and there really wasn't a lot of difference in the condition of the guitars, just the mood of the buyer and seller on the day of the sale.
