Hi,

I am interested in purchasing a new Ovation Custom Legend 1869, and I have heard that Ovation guitars in general are notorious for falling apart over the long haul(particularly the bridge falling off). I am concerned, and am wondering what the general concensus is regarding this topic.

In addition, I have seen some pictures (all supposedly depicting the same 1869 Custom Legend model) with and without a carved bridge. Does it have a carved bridge or not (or is it an option)? I am not referring to the Al Dimeola model, just a Custom Legend #1869.

I appreciate any feedback.

Thanks,
Dave

My experience has been that Ovations hold together very well. In 30 years (man I'm old!) of playing them, I've never had a problem with a bridge. All guitars have examples of problems here and there. I've seen Martins fall apart after a couple of years. I would think that you should have no trouble with Ovations.

As to the carved bridge on the Custom Legends... They used to have carved bridges. I just went to the Ovation website and aparently, a couple of years ago when they redesined their guitars, they stopped making the carved bridges. Probably hoping to cut costs.

Watch ebay. You can buy older Custom Legends for $4-800 and they are great bargins.

My Ovations range in age from new to 30 years old (one of them I've been abusing since it was new in '78) I have yet to have any problems with any of them. They're tough. They're well made.

My guitar may be the exception to the rule, but it's the only one I ever bought. First, electronics went out. The dealer replaced the tuner. Then the bridge unglued and snapped off. This all happened within days of purchase. I ended up sending it back to Ovation under warranty. Waited 2 months for them to "rebuild" it. Finally got it yesterday. Time will tell if it holds up.

But for you, I will make a special deal. This one is the Custom Legend in Cherryburst with carved bridge. Supposed to be like brand new after rebuild, per Ovation. You a gamblin' man?

You know, guitars are like everything else. If you're going to have problems, they happen all at once or not at all. Computers are like that. I've had some that never had any problems and others that spent their first two months in the shop.

I doubt that a guitar company exists that has never had a guitar come off the line that did not have any problems.
Even our beloved Ovations can have issues, but I tend to agree with Paul if something is going to go wrong it will go wrong early on. the only other way guitars develop problems is abuse and storage issues
