Location: SoCal | Was in another Guitar Center last night (there are 6 that are in Los Angeles and Orange Counties that I can get to). Once again, the good Ovations were high up on the wall and the crappy ones were down low. They had an Elite LX (New England barnburst), and an Elite T with red flames. Strings were dead on both.
But the interesting guitar was a 1984 blue Adamas supershallow bowl, made for Alan Holdsworth (that's what the label said). The GC was asking $2300 for it and it badly needed a neck reset. The saddle was as low as it could get and the strings were still way high.
But I was amazed at the sound that came from the guitar. Others here who own these have talked about how good the acoustic sound is. Until now, I took those comments with a grain of salt. Now I understand. Worth $2300? Not with the neck problems, but at $15-1800, with a trip to O, this would be a good guitar. |

Location: Phoenix AZ | Hey Paul, Sounds like the crime rate in LA area must be down with all this time on your hands to visit the GC's (ha ha). I know WalMart hires plain clothes security guys to look like they are "shopping" in order to spy on would-be thiefs. I know because I allied for the job. Maybe GC hires similar people to just sit around and play Limp Bizkit riffs all day and catch shoplifters. Sign me up. And get me some hearing protection.
My most amazing GC story is about the one here in Tempe AZ. In 1997, just a few months after getting my History Of Ovation book, I walked in to GC and they had TWO of the '96 Book Elite guitars on display. I didn't even know the guitar existed or was for sale other than the photo on the cover of the book. I rushed home with soiled shorts and begged my wife for her understanding that I was about to spend our vacation money on a guitar. So even though in general GC is a joke and we all make a lot of fun of them and the way they choose to sell their product, GC will always have a small soft spot in my heart over this guitar. And somebody ELSE in the Phx area also owns a Book Elite, tho I don't know who. |

Location: Canton (Detroit), MI | My local GC has finally fattened up again on Ovation USA products. They currently have two S771 Balladeers, one spruce-top, one cedar-, a 1777LX-CCB Legend, TWO of the special GC burst color Elite LXs, a flamed Elite T, plus the "famous" Adamas CVT that has resided in the rafters for the past year. Also, a 6751 Balladeer 12-string.
