IF YOU PUSH IT, THEY WILL BUY IT ...

My day job is basically convincing people to buy shit that they don't need and can not afford. It's really not that hard to do.

I agree - you can convince people to buy things that they really don't need...I do it all the time.

It is a little easier with $6.00 loaves of bread than $3500 guitars though. :D

While I was playing the Koa a guy came in looking to upgrade his guitar situation. He has been playing for a little over a year from how he played, he is doing pretty good. His friend said to just come in and pick out a Taylor. I offered to play any guitar he wanted so he could hear what they sound like up front. I made sure he tried a few Ovations and I told him what I like about them. I had him turn his back and I played a few so he could try and judge by sound alone. Then he asked THE question..."What should I buy??" I did not strong arm the guy. I suggested that he get what suits him, not someone else.

Popped into my local guitar shop, they just got in s/n 00013 '06 collector. Very, very, very nice with a $1980 sticker price + tax if anyone is looking for one...

At least Brad gave the guy some balance....my experience at Huber and Breese is that the salespeople LOVE Taylor and Martin (in that order), tolerate Gibson and ignore Ovation. And they look at you with a funny smile when they find out you like Ovations.....

Of course, what's different about that compared to most other shops, I guess????? :)

Humm....

Dislikes:
:( One-piece laminated neck...yuck, fugly comes to mind.
:( Cut of the neck, seems very round & a fat neck. I'm partial to the Adamas shallow-V necks myself.

Likes:
:D Contoured bowl...first time with it, really like how it rides and resounates on the tummy.
 VIP...WOW, can I get it retrofitted into everything I have? I dumped it into a Marshall 100w stack, it really has some awesome settings.
 Overall look of the Koa, just gorgeous. I think the bearclaw is the only thing I've seen that looks finer.

So, would I dump the $2k for it? Probably not, would spend it on an early AD I instead and have it retrofitted with the VIP.

It looks like it was cut from just one piece of wood, from blade of the head down to the bowl. No stripe, no joined halves, just one piece of wood.

Also, the neck feels like it weighs twice what the bowl weighs. The balance point seems to be around the ninth or tenth fret.

I agree with Tim. Beautiful looking Koa top. The neck looks nice, although it is VERY fat in depth. Overall the guitar is extremely heavy. The workmanship looked quite good and the setup was perfect. If you like the VIP or not, and if you like the unplugged sound or not is a personal matter of taste. Dave

It still strikes me as odd to make a Celebrity the same basic setup as your 06 Collector's edition. Our local GC (which carries CRAP for O selection) has one of the Celery-Koa models, and, though it's obviously no where's near the quality of the USA O's, it looks SERIOUSLY close cosmetically to the Koa Collector's.

I haven't had the chance to play the 06C, but I've always been fond of the Koa tops. Maybe subconsciously I'd rather be out hanging with Tim on the island...

Edensharvest is Andrew. He has changed his signature to Fat Gumbo Lee. ( I should have put the Blues name on my list of goals too).

All of this has inspired me to work on an OFC Board game.

Can we work a reality angle in here somewhere? I've got some people that I'd dearly like to vote off the island.

Well, the topic seemed to swing a bit from the start, but I have #87 of the 2006 Collectors, and it is a very nice axe. The top is beautiful, it is more comfortable to play with the contoured bowl, and the electronics package is a dream to use for recording.

The one piece neck seems to be a non-issue. It is stiff without being sterile. I, also, prefer the shallow V contour of the other Ovation necks, but, oddly enough, it really does not bother me on this guitar. It did on other Ovations that I have tried, but this neck is comfortable.

The cost for this guitar is higher than previous Collectors, but, in this case, I think it is worth the extra money. I also feel that the 2006 Ovation Collector wil actually increase in value as their limited numbers will command a premium price for those that were not fortunate enough to buy one before they sell out.

Mike
