I am new, this is my first post. But, I'm an old guy with old Ovations and one "new" one from 1999. My question is this: the newest one is a Elite 1858 12-string with a crack that runs from the bottom of the bridge straight down to the bottom of the guitar. It looks like it is in the wood and hasn't separated too much yet. I am having a guitar luthier look at it Monday for repairing. Now, you people out there with years of experience here is my question: if it is repaired, does it deminish the value? I paid $700 for it, and believe me it is perfect except for the crack. Looks like the original owner put it in tune and stuck it away and it cracked. There is no fret board wear, no pick marks, no, heck... it looks new. Any input welcome. And, hello!

If it has a back hatch, have a look at the crack from the inside - just to be sure it's in the wood, not just the finish. A repair will diminish its value somewhat - but so does an non-repaired crack.

Yes, it I can barely see it on the inside, but it is there. Taking it to an Ovation luthier tomorrow. He said over the phone he could fix it like new. Yippee!

You are now free to post in the main forums. Please keep us updated. Even cracks can be repaired without changing the sound too much, depending on the crack of course.

Mr. Ovation -- thanks so much. I never heard of this site until I Googled something about fixing my older 12 string and here I am! Looks like a friendly place, with good info. I probably will find myself going to the P&W area, as that is my forte now.. Happy New Year!
