My way,no problems.Works.
An Ovation comes with 3 shims under the saddle.Keep them.
Put the butt of the guitar on your nose and stare down the fretboard over the top of the bridge.Really look.
Raise or lower the strings with the shims.
I have found 1 shim works.Always.
Tune up and play a bunch of open chords and slap it around little.
If it does not buzz,go for the gold.
Give the Truss rod a tickle by turning the nut.Right is tight, left is loose.
Go right.
This brings the the fretboard up,and fine tunes the setup.
Always keep it in proper tune during adjustments.
Do it right and you get a little snap from the fat strings.
Works on wives and girlfriends too.

Thanks. This is good ... reminds me of the instructions in my John Muir "VW...Complete Idiot" book, which is still in use around here. So's the veedub.

I've always wondered about the technique people use to add and remove shims whilst strings are on the guitar. It seems like a bit of a PITA to me.

Which part is that? Always using 1 shim? Turning the nut to tickle the truss rod? Putting the butt on your nose and stare down over the top? Always keeping in proper tune during adjustments?

The strings have to come off to add or remove the shims.
Everybody goes so fast at everything nowadays.
Take the hour and a clean cloth and do the job right.Learn to look and see the logic of this guitar.
Let the Martin guys do the "Neck resets" with boiling animal parts for glue and all that "Vintage" crap.
On the O,shims, trussrod and play like hell.
