They (actually John and Yoko) aren't trying to say anything other than "look how avant garde we are". Its a shameless piece of pop-culture narcissism. Complete rubbish.

Nothin' really, as long as it's right after the Double 'O' Dawghouse Bass.

I have a copy of Revolution #9 on CD playing backwards. If anyone wants a copy, let me know and I can burn a copy. PM me. To be honest, it's not a lot different than the forwards version.

The way it came about, I had a friend come over with his turntable and vinyl recordings to use my CD recorder. For some reason, his turntable would occasionally spin backwards. The next time it happened, I ran upstairs, grabbed my white album, and the rest is history, as they say.

Actually, I have inside knowledge that Revolution #9 is actually John & Yoko's recreation of Paul McCartney's fatal car crash. You can hear the progression of events, including the burning car and Paul's moaning, and the events that swirled about as a result. Lennon very craftily segues into Good Night, which seals the deal. Listen to it from start to finish and it will all come clear to you.

And yes, it does say "turn me on, dead man" in the backwards version.

GWB ... I'll take the free whatever.

I think the Beatles wrote #9 simply because they were the Beatles and they could. Maybe it was an inside joke to see what they could get a studio to produce.

And I agree that Yoko's influence is all over the song.

And if you enjoyed #9, I highly recommend a listen to "You know my name, look up the number".

They were just having fun, they knew that 40 years latter they'd be a bunch of blokes on the ovation fan club croking its meaning. It's just meant to be cool.

Actually, the first time I heard I was creeped-out!

I heard that if you play Yoko Ono backwards, you can hear McCartney laughing.

I vote for the hash. Ah, memories... I wish I had some... memories that is.

As a much younger man, I got pulled over by the police and had to stash a half gram in my cheek. The cop let me off but the hash had dissolved and an hour later I was out of my mind. Been there ever since. I'd be in an institution today if it weren't for... #9... #9...

I love the Beatles, but I'll take the hash. And I quit doing drugs many years ago. It's excess, it's a private joke. Better than most, tho.

Lots of bands took great pride in creating very abstract lyrics, (60's70's) Lots of conscious expansion and basic drug ingestion going on. Sometimes they made a fuzzy point or two but very often they did not mean much of anything.
This was one of my Fathers big arguments with me when I was young about my "Goddam Hippy Music" (he was a Folk music fan I am too to some extent) I do like a song with a story, be it funny or serious, but I do not have a problem with the abstract. Those songs give you the freedom to think what you want about them.
They often create a feeling for me. some songs when I hear them bring back my mental attitude and the feelings, the memories, expectations for the future... you know ...the recollection of where you were in relation to your view of the world and where you were in life in general at that time. Its like a Taste or memory just on the tip of your tongue.
I can remember where I was when I first heard some of them and they bring me back there like I am in that monent again, just for a second. If you see my point. Those songs don't tell you what to think of them, its like a painting you like it or you don't... To speculate about it and get all philosophical and try and pick it apert does not change your feelings about it when you see it, so why bother.
Just smoke some good Dope and listen, then it will all make sense.

#9 is just a filler and it helped them establish themselves as experimental and cool, there is all kinds of backgound sounds and odd little fills like this all through their music starting in the mid/later 60's that kept them "Cool" to this new and paying audience.

Conan O'Brian: What DO you remember about those days?
Ringo Starr: Well I'll tell you Conan. Me boys went out and bought the Beatles cards for Trivial Pursuit. We played it the other night and I couldn't answer a single bloody question.

(the interview was during yet another Beatles anniversary a few years ago)

I thought it was all about Paul getting killed in a car crash and being replaced with an imposter....

The Beatles took risks with their music. Most of the time those risks paid off and sometimes they didn't. On the other hand, 40 yrs. later, and folks are still talking about Revolution #9.
