The guy made/sold custom boards, some really nice Hawaiian Shirts and surfwear, and some ukes. He had a LOT of vintage and expensive authentic Hawaiian ukes (lotsa Koa!), but said that the multi-hole electric O'uke was by FAR his favorite!!!

My mother bought me one in the 50's and said the proper tuning was "MY DOG HAS FLEAS", then we played every Aurthur Godfrey song we could remember until he fired Mr Larosa. Then we went on to "Sweet Leilaini", "Hawaiin Wedding Song", "Aloha Ohe" and "When Irish Eyes are Smiling", "How are Things in Glockamorrow", "THE WEARING OF THE GREEN", But I digress, it is as good an instrument as any to express a longing for the home shore. Dave's Uke (I think the pearloid tuner buttons "pushed" him over the edge!!! :D ) **** Maybe for next year's jam we all could vote on a Beatles tune to do on the ukulele together!!(I vote for "All you need is Love" or "Here comes the Sun")and to not exclude anyone who doesn't have a uke we could form a Ukulele & Kazoo Band!!(you could even use wax paper around a pocket comb!! - I've done THAT before! ;) ) **** Anyone know how to play a JUG? **** What Beatles song do ya'll :D think we should do??? **** Mike

Joined: April 2004 Posts: 5 Location: Huntington Beach, CA | Aloha. I'm new to this site and actually joined because I know nothing about Applause or Ovation aside from playing a few at Sam Ash. My guitar is a classical La Patrie Collection and I have three ukes (which is why I am here). My ukes are a Martin baritone (tuned DGBE as is normal) and two sopranos, sometimes called standards, tuned GCEA. This long-winded intro is because I'm looking for a tenor uke and Applause has come out with a 4 string tenor, laminated spruce top, with pick up and eq. I assume it is tuned GCEA, although traditional tenors can be tuned like a baritone, i.e., the top four strings of a guitar. I would appreciate it if any of you would pass on your impressions of the Applause tenor uke (if any) or what I might expect if I make the leap into the for me unknown. I have heard the Ovation/Applause line has great electronics but are weak when played acoustically. True? False? Does that mean I am committed to an amp? Is the uke neck wide enought to fingerpick easily or is it basically a strummer? I am obviously a newcomer to "plugging in" and I appreciate the insights you can give me. Mahalo for all your help.

Still very cute, though. When I open the song and try to save the file to my disc, all I get saved is the link to the web site. Any suggestions? Thanks, Brad

I don't think you can download any of the songs on that site! **** Mike

So what you learn is applicable to the guitar too. Unlike learning the mandolin, which is tuned like a violin. While I don't have a mando, I've got a samisen, that I rarely play more than a noodle because of this. Besides it's hard to find tab for it. Once upon a time, I made the mistake of telling an okanawan how much I liked her playing, and she just handed it to me! Next time I see her, maybe, I'll give her a uke.
