Paul, I just wondered how far you were playing up the neck with that 12 string?
Having played 12 string electrics for a while, I think you are maybe asking it to do something which would be very hard to achieve intonationally, past perhaps the 5th position.
(no matter how good/expensive the guitar)
Finger pressure will, as you know, not be evenly distributed that far up the neck, and slight bends (putting one octave string out with the other) are bound to occur.
As you have to alter the string intonation in pairs on one saddle, this is not ideal either.
- Never kept an electric 12 in tune any longer than 3 gigs at the most, due to mainly the wound and plain strings deteriorating at differing rates.
Best of luck anyway -

If I remember right; the thread size is the same as that used on some gun silencers. You might check with a gun smith to see if you can get them made.

Have somebody in the UK grab it and ship it to you with the neck separated. Toss the gig bag. Viola!

interesting that the bottom of the fretboard is straight rather than the mustache. Also that it's rosewood, not ebony.. perhaps not original?

David the shipping is not so much the issue, the exchange rate and import taxes are.

My daughter works for EMI in London and has shipped a couple for me previously.

It's $1400 before shipping and taxes

I use the entire fingeboard. And frankly if a "professional" instrument cannot be in tune across it's entire playable range (within the limits of tempered tuning and the compromises involved in that of course) then it is not a professional instrument, 12 string or not. There is no reason why a quality electric 12-string cannnot be set up and adjusted to play in tune across it's range. The fact that the early Ovation electric 12-string bridges have a fixed saddle seems to the obstacle to an accurate set-up. I've borrowed a cheap Danelectro 12-string reissue which is almost perfectly intonated in every position. If that piece of junk can play in tune then a Deacon 12 should too.

Anyone know the factory string gauges for a Deacon 12. Presumably the saddle was compensated for a specific string set.

String gauges listed on the last page.

Doh! I have that manual. And strangely, that's the gauges I'm using and it's still not right

Paul, I'll be looking out for your CD in the shops, the sound you produce playing up at the 24th fret of a 12 string Deacon, must sound quite extraordinary.

Didn't you once tell me that the there was no need for the Schaller 12 string adjustable bridge because the original brass bridge was right on? Or words to that effect?

Is this the part where Perry Mason starts to pace in front of the witness?

I'm sure moody was named after Perry's faithful PI, Paul Drake. Drake didn't dress as well, though. Magnum kind of changed the dress code.

I think the best solution would be to get somebody else to play the 12 string parts.

OK, you're hired. Sessions start as soon as you are availble. We'll pay standard Musician's Union hourly rate plus travelling, accomodation and PD's. Make sure you bring an electric 12-string that's up to the task.

Oh, and if you are struggling with the definition of "tempered tuning" then you should think twice about offering advice about guitar intonation.

No, I told you that the Schaller bridge was a total design abortion, because the saddle adjustment screws are in the wrong place and are obstructed by the bridge pickup, and the original Ovation bridge was a major compromise but kinda OK-ish. Glad we cleared that up.

Paul, I'll get a pic off to you over the weekend in case the replacement from CrimsonLake doesn't work out. Sorry for the delayed reply; I forgot which thread I had posted on... :o

Update - I've traded emails with Lars at Schaller - and it appears that they don't have anymore of the threaded posts or barrels for the all metal bridges.
