There was a woman Marylin, Connie and me, and a massive crowd of two others. So we played for a long time. Then there was another guy who walked in with his guitar and he played for a while. Said I looked familiar. Turned out he was a pilot who used to fly into JAX and buy fuel. Small world.

Just because you can do an open mic, doesn't mean you should. [/QB]
So I guess that I'm supposed to just stay home until I'm "perfect" enough for an open mike?

No, just pick the right open mic to start at.

I'm told that there is another tonight at the "real" Alice's church. Probly will be more than 5 people there at this one.

Actually, Beal, I've done three open mike nights all at one place. They've actually tolerated my bad playing and have offered me some help. I sometimes go there even if I don't play anything.

Some have asked me when I'm going to play there again, but I really don't have anything to play for them. I think I am my own worst critic anyway.

I did the open mic thing to get on the bill at The Gaslight and The Bitter End back in the day. If you did well at open mics and got "noticed" they offered you a paid slot on the other nights.

Yes, there were some terrible and quirky people at the open mics. There were also some drop-dead-talented-ought-to-be-stars there as well, although I don't know what happened to most of them.

Well it seems that this road goes on forever and the party just never ends. There is another one tonight at the Church, better known as Alice's church or the Guthrie centre. Guess we'll do three in a row. Really getting used to driving route 7 south at night.

Bill..
I'd figure your "Temptation" song would go over well at an open mic.

Naw, you keep doing it.
You'll get better with time.
Just pick the right ones to attend.
Some are more beginner placrs other are for established performers.

Just remember every stadium act you ever seen or heard of Sucked bigtime at some point in time.
You just did know of them then.

Hmm I was looking through the local events in the paper last night while we waited for our burgers at this burger restaurant and noticed a few open mic postings, thought to myself hmm never been to one, then I see this post on here today, maybe I should go to one sometime and have a listen... Can't play any complete songs so obviously that's not an option..

Guitarzannie... I encourage you and any other out there to give the open mic thing a shot.
It's a great thing for setting goals. It can force.. I mean encourage you to polish up your skills.
Sometimes it will scare the hell out of ya. But when it works it makes it all worth it.

During the summer, I play most Friday evenings at an outdoor jam. Some of the tunes I play go over real well. Some fall flat. Playing in front of people is the only way to learn which tune does which.

And since we're in a group of players, I try to have 3-5 different tunes ready each week. It's good for me, constantly working on stuff, and good for the listeners, to hear different stuff (nothing is worse than playing the same 3 tunes, week after week).

I think that the advice was aimed at me. I am one of those people who should not be singing alone in public! Playing guitar, fine. Singing quietly in the background, fine. Alone in front of the mic? Nobody deserves that torture!

My mother is a wonderful singer and always encouraged me to sing. I thought that her comments about how well I did were not just a biased Mom talking, until I played golf with her, after too many "good shots" when I'd top the ball or hit it out of bounds, I began to doubt her opinion about my voice.
The urge to sing in front of people isn't very strong, not because of fear alone, but more because I just don't much care if anyone hears me. Playing guitar is different. I don't have much opportunity for the open mic stuff, but I had to work really hard to avoid embarassment at the last gathering. I wish I had practiced more before going to Denver this weekend.

Mark, if lack of practice frightens you then when you come over you can just look and drool and we can take photos. :D

Brad, I have done three open mikes, but it has been a while since I have done one.

With the last time out, I attempted "Leaving on a Jet Plane" and "Rhymes and Reasons". I got so nervous that I forgot how to do the chords and also forgot the words, even though they were right in front of me!

I talked to a local guitar player a few months ago. I told him that I had been taking lessons for two years and that I had tried an open mike the month prior. He said "I was playing for a lot longer than two years before I tried an open mike night. You've got guts!"

I figure to be above 90% of the open-mikers I've heard (OFC gatherings excepted) you don't have to be good, merely coherent.
