Mine's on the Christmas list, but I didn't put it up at the top. Now I'm thinking that even I could have some fun with it.

Toby, I wonder if you're going to be this excited when your foot heals, the drugs wear off, and you get your "so called" life back?

Tobster spent plenty of time on this board before he got hurt. What makes you think he has a life to go back to?

... this from the man with almost 11,000 posts.

Hey Paul, when you visit next week we'll record you playing GOMM into the IDEA and then I can play it along "with" you every day just like you were here.

1. Dispute my earlier comment the tuner isn't very good at all. It has a lot of trouble locking on a note. I'm trying to tune E and it;s dancing around from E to C# to A and D#. I now I'm close to E so ignore all the garbage and zone in on E but it's pretty annoying. The other gripe is that the "OK" range is pretty wide. Not precise at all. I can tune it from "noticeably sharp" to "noticeably flat" and the tuner still says right on. I guess this is good to get you close but you'll have to use your ear or a quality external to really do the job.

Toby
I finally got around to plugging mine into the 2080D and found the tuner to behave properly and not exhibit the symptoms you mentioned.

Don't know if that was because I was tuned down to a "C" instead of an "E" but it seemed pretty dead on.

I will check it again later tonight and then check that tuning against the Peterson strobe and see how close it actually is.

I'm going to check mine against all of your items later tonight and see if I have the same issues.

I had previously posted in this thread that the tuner was having trouble locking onto the notes. I found the situation improved a bit if I tuned octave harmonmics instead of open strings. The tuner seemed to "like" that a bit more.

But the real surprise came when I changed strings. Same strings EJ16, just new ones. The tuner worked just fine! Seems that it had trouble with old strings, maybe because they have more spurrious overtones or something.

Anyway, summary is that tuner works fine with the new strings and maybe this is a good reminder. Once you have trouble locking on trhe tuner it's time to change strings.

I have had trouble with all my ovations with tuners with old strings.

I always tune with the 12th fret harmonics. that gives me the most accurate tuning.

I finally got someone to put a battery in the one at the local GC. This time they had it hung up by the ceiling. They didn't have a clue how to work it, what it did, how to get the reverb turned off on the amp we were using, etc. I couldn't figure out how to record anything, so it was pretty much a wasted test. The only good thing was when it started talking and the salesgirl stepped back like she was wondering where the voice was coming from.

I saw one at GC the other day.
As an experiment I tried to find out who had more knowledge of it's features, me or the GC acoustic room saledude.
I won.
I won like I was the team playing the Detroit Lions this week.
I crushed him!

I am surprised that they took such an advanced, first of it's kind feature and put it on such a bad example of a guitar. I mean, this thing is "throw it over Niagra Falls" material. It's have Paul Templeman "put a boot into it" type material. It's an MOB with a bad paint job.
I'd be interested to hear the thoughts behind that tactic.

Wow, maybe the one I played was extraordinary cause it played nice, looked nice, and seemed extremely well built. For $600 or so bucks I was very impressed.

The one in our local GC is of spotty paint quality. It has a Made in China sticker on it. The battery is, of course, deader than a doornail. The sound of the guitar is ok, a bit plastic compared to a solid top LX, but still pretty good acoustically.

For those that don't have an Ovation yet, it is a reasonable entry point. That guitar gets a lot of play time, at least the few times I've been in recently. But if GC expects to sell any, they need to figure out how to put a damn battery in it!

BTW, the preamp is not tethered to the guitar. Even around here it is surprising that it hasn't walked away.

To me, the real answer for an O fan who wants the iDEA is to just buy the kit from Al and drop it into your existing guitars.

The one here played well acoustically and looked decent. The preamp was tethered until I pried it out (someone had replaced it improperly) and dropped it. They are not making any effort to sell it here.
