Location: Utah | With all the talk of preamps lately, here's an MP3 comparison of three. The guitar is a 1778T-Red Flame with new GHS White Bronze strings, 12's.
The same chord progression was repeated for each sample. The eq was flat on all the preamps and no effects or tweaking was done in recording. The VIP images sound quite a bit better with modest treble boost, but in the interest of accurate comparison it was left flat.

The order of Preamps and settings as follows:
1) Op30 clean
2) Op30 with preshape button pushed in
3) VIP clean
4) VIP image 3, set to 45% image (one of the mic emulations)
5) VIP image 4, set to 45% image, an Adamas simulation
6) Studio clean
7) Studio with 40% compression
8) Studio with 40% compression and 50% exciter. This is more exciter than ideal but it gives a good idea of what it does.
The VIP had the hottest signal. Compared to the OP30, the input on the recorder had to be pulled back by 4.0 db, and it is still a bit louder. The Studio had to be pulled back by 3.0 db.
My impressions are that the OP30 is a little less bassy than the other two. The VIP with added treble boost does sound very nice in the 1778T-RF, better than it did in it's original home, the '07C. The exciter in the Studio does add a definite woody acousticness. The compressor does a nice job, too. |

Location: Chicago | Wow, that IS cool. I have only been able to effectively compare the OP PRO (not too fond of that one) with the Studio. Your results coincide with my experience (although I've had trouble with wiring on the Studio: a persistent hum and a booster switch malfunction [AD 1769]). Gotta take that to the man since I think it's not a preamp but an axe problem.
Thanks for the effort! |

Vic Yup. I put new strings on my daughter's 1778T-RF yesterday. This morning I swapped preamps in and out, recording them. The samples were recorded sequentially, so everything is as identical as possible.
The only thing I missed was trying the plain OpPro for comparison. |
