Now I've got my Ute set up just how I like it I've got a really loud buzz on the top string from fret 9 to 12. The fret that needs levelling is 13. I've had this on non-cutaway guitars before - they never think that they'll be played high up so they don't bother to check them - and in the past I've had a luthier fix the problem.
But I'm not handing my ute over to anyone.
I've bought a fret levelling file from a luthier supplies place but the sheer size of the damn thing terrifies me. It weighs 6ozs, measures 1 & 1/8" wide, 6 & 5/16" long and 1/4" thick.
How do I use this thing without damaging anything? Or do I mail it back with a diagram of where the man can put it?

Ok, now that I let that one pass... Place a rigid straight edge over the frets to see how far it must filed... (Make sure it doesn't just need to be seated). Place some masking tape on the fretboard and around the neck on either side of the frets you are working. Use it lightly and check the fret frequently...

Then you'll need to dress it... something in a nice floral pattern...

No horizontal stripes! It will make it look fat!

Use one of these. Just file down the offending area on the fret. Check the level of the fret by rocking a short straight edge over that fret using the two adjacent frets as a gauge (as described in the second url).
