I watch the CBS Sunday Morning news program whenever I can. Yesterday's was about Christmas and featured the TranSyberian Orchestra. Our thread on the article about rock influences made me think of this, not because I think TSO changed anything major, but because of a response to a rather typical question about negative reviews and critics. The TSO guy (can't remember his name) said he'd rather have his bunch of platinum records and sold out concerts than a bunch of favorable reviews.
I really enjoyed their concert a couple years ago and would like to go to more, although my wife, who already has a major hearing loss, said it was too loud. She suggested that we take some others to the next one as Christmas gifts. Sounds like a great idea to me.
They are obviously and unabashedly over the top with their pyrotechnics, but it's a fun show.

I just heard them on the radio the other day, the one station left that doesn't have Only Christmas music playing. I was mock-conducting with much animation, while driving into town, and thinking how Really Wonderful they were! Their Music and Talent finally put a Christmas Smile on this Ol' Grinch's face!!

Be careful of the friends you take to TSO. We took some good friends who just didn't get it. Because they had not heard them before except some minor radio play probably didn't help. They had fun, but they likely won't go again. The one we took them to started out with the war-esque imagery which I have to admit took me awhile to piece together in my head, but that's the part (all 3 or 4 minutes) of the show that stuck with them of the 2 hours+ of show. I'm just say'n, not everyone loves that sort of thing. They should, but they don't.

My wife doesn't really get the music, but she likes the Narrator and the corny Christmas story. I've never been much for the fireworks, but I really like the musicians. My guitar teacher got drafted a couple times to play the violin in the ensemble. He said he had a tough time sight reading the music in the short amount of time they had to practice before the concert. The primary musicians and singers are all incredible.
