AstroDan - I've come to believe that whatever works is what's right for you. You're in good company with Jimmy Page and John Paul Jones as far as resting your palm goes. There are, I think, as many styles out there as there are guitar players.

Mark in Boise - I've always played better with my fingers, particularly when it comes to picking individual notes. I've marvelled at how people SLOWLY play individual notes with a pick. :D I use my homemade flat/thumbpick for songs like Eagles and Lightfoot tunes, where you're just worried about strumming full chords and not concerned with bass notes.

As far as it goes, two of my favorite guitar players, Mark Knopfler and Lindsay Buckingham, always play everything with their fingers. They don't even own a pick. Buckingham is a fiend! I have no idea how he does what he does...

Fly Sig, here so advise that I used to learn how to finger pick. I thought my self. First I did not like the sound of my finger nails touching the strings. I cut them down so I would have a nice soft sound and the fingers roll off the strings with out a snag from a finger nail. Second. I decided to finger pick with 3 fingers not four. It allowed me to have a nice banjo roll if I needed it, and I didn't have to worry about the 4th finger dragging behind. Third overtime I'm sitting, at home in a car listening to music, on my right thigh, since I'm right handed, I would practice rolling my fingers. First Thumb, Forefinger then middles finger. I would then change the order I was doing the rolls. Plus I would due the same thing and practice plucking two strings one with the thumb and one with the middle finger, and alternate it. We have so much down time that we don't realize and it works great in a car, listing to music and try to play with your fingers on your thigh. Then when you use your guitar, like many said before, use open chords, Practice playing. A D chord is great to practice, because there is 4 string to worry about and by lifting your ring finger or placing you pinky down, or even lifting up you middle or forefinger, with the roll your are creating wonderful sounds. Then when your comfortable with that move to another chord and go back and forth. You always have down time and your thigh is your guitar. Most important have fun.

I started playing guitar with a pick and just strumming, then I switched to playing banjo, so I learned bluegrass banjo rolls. Then I applied that to guitar, and then the ramones came along, and banjo rolls disappeared, and then I didn't like using a pick, so now I use my thumb and forefinger for single notes, and strum with the back of the finger nails. I know it's inefficient and weird, and I have ti adapt songs to my limitions. But then I have my own style so I'm cool with that. I guess that's a definition of style, what you can do with your limitations.

John Hartford was the one that said style is based on limitations.

Yeah, there is some improvement. The thumb isn't independent yet, though it is taking less brain power to work it. The frustration level is down below wanting to break things.

Moderate. You can't do it on your first day, but it's not that hard.

rick, I haven't played in almost 3 weeks now. The thumb was getting better but honestly nowhere near independant. I'm on an extended trip to Europe with my son, home in a few days, and I'll dive back into playing.

We visited the Royal College of Music in London to see their musical instrument museum. It was small but superb. They had some early guitars from the 1600's which I'll post pictures of when I get home. I can't get pics into anywhere but facebook right now, and that is only when I can find free wifi.
