The original Adamas, both I & II with the single epaulet on the bass side, were done originally because people wanted cutaways, and Ovation wasn't certain about how to do the treble epaulets with cutaways. This would have been about 1983-84 (it's a 2 knobber). Some were built with the single epaulet, then later with the epaulets on both sides.

An unintended benefit was that the bass was much stronger with no soundholes on the treble side. Why they didn't keep making them that way is beyond me. Maybe it was felt that there was too much bass response.....

I'm not a fan of black guitars, but the one in this thread is beautiful....

I think that's one of the reasons it's got me going, Paul. The last one I played with just the bass epaulets was a bit bass heavy (for my ears) and I think the treble sided epaulets would have almost had to give it a better balanced sound. Together with the deep bowl, I'll bet that's a great sounding instrument. And I'm not into black all that much either but I do like that one.

Weas, if you played my 1581 last year you know what they sound like.

Your 1581 has just the bass side epie's, right? That's what I'm recalling anyway...

Nope, mine has both. It has plenty of bass, though.

Well, that does answer my question then. I do remember the big bass out of yours but thought you just had the bass side epi's, not both.

As I was... ;)

I don't think the single-side epi's give you more bass, I think they just give you less treble, making the bass seem more pronounced. Not that there's anything wrong with that.

Just some of the many weird and wonderful guitars they made in their search for the ute.

Please don't get me wrong, Waskel. At last year's Tour, I played a number of guitars that I wanted to run out the back door with and yours was one of the first. And, if there was any doubt what sound was possible (with a little talent behind it, of course), your cd puts that to rest. No disrespect intended and, should a 47RI be presented in front of me for "fiddybux" and cause me to implode, you are still first in line (with JW and Schroeder, of course) to take what's left of my sparkly 1537 (and I say that because I intend on taking everything I can with me ;) ).
