Well, FWIW, on the six guitar test I was correct on the first four. I saw another video of three guitars being tested and got all 3 correct. Do I get a Golden Ear award? It would probably imply you're a candidate. Something of that nature is actually a pretty good weeder test to get 80% of the dreamers off the list, right off the bat. Now, similar test, varying tonal structures, 5 randomly arranged sound clips. If you can beat that, then you might be a good candidate to see if you're not the outlier.

What exactly do you mean with "correct" - were you able to determine the brand/manufacturer, the actual model, the type of string used, the materials used in construction, the age of the instrument, the "popularity" of the tone, the retail price of the instrument - or all of these or something else?
I think that while manufacturers probably put in some effort and quality control measures to minimize variability on their production lines so that there is a certain similarity in sound, playability, and other characteristics within each batch that gets produced, once the instrument leaves the factory and is subject to handling and varying environments and setups these similarities can vanish quickly. So with these reviews and tests one always has to wonder just how representative an individual guitar is of its production batch. |

Location: New Bern, NC | Well, I guess I won't be buying a Washburn any time soon. It sounded like the cheapest to me. To me the Taylor sounded way too bright for my taste. The Martin also sounded a bit bright, but had more resonance. I described the Ibanez as "nice balanced sound." I called the sound of the Ovation "rich sounding." I quite liked the sound of the very cheap one. I really surprised myself! |

Someone here (I think it was Dave) did his own tone test between six guitars some years back that was a real blast to hear and weigh in on. Of course, we're all limited by our own computer gear, but I appreciated the time and effort he took to put it together. As Flysig said in another forum, my ears are shot from too much loud playing, sitting directly behind a 125 piece symphony playing full out, and loud motorcycle pipes over the years. At this point in my life, with the right pedals and signal chain, I can be satisfied with the tone from just about any guitar I own, so, it comes down to what feels the best to me. In that case, it is always the SSB models (my 1187 custom my favorite), the EA Vipers, and the VXT, although I'm quite found of the Hamer Monoco III, too. While I love the tone of a good Strat, particularly when you need a strong whammy bar, I hate the position of the volume switch. With my lousy technique, I'm always inadvertently turning the volume off mid-song. So, of course, none of my Strats actually have a volume knob anymore. You also can't go wrong with a good Tak with the CT2 preamp mixed with a Triax pup. |
