My late '80'a Ovation Custom Balladeer is making lots of noise when plugged in. The battery is fine but it sounds like a tube going bad in a guitar amp- sputtering noises, sound fading in and out and crackles at the body input jack. I suppose I can get the jack replaced- what are the chances the onboard preamp died out? Any ideas what it costs to replace that? I'm not the original owner.

I'd replace the jack first. Have somebody do it for about $30. I'd bet it'd solve your porblem.

Thanks for the suggestion. I've owned several vintage roundbacks and this is the first one I've ever had trouble with. Is this a common repair item for anyone else?
