Im just curious if anyone has any expirience with these. I played one a while ago just after i started playing and the action and feel was nice, but the sound was very guitar like rather than mandolin like (no boxy or fiddle sound to it) i can hear how the sound could be used in what I'm doing. I was wondering if i could make a metal rod in the shape of the back of the bridge to put through loop end strings. that way i could use any string i wanted rather than just a ball end one.

Yup, that's exactly what I do. But no matter what strings I've used, the ovation mando does have a sound all it's own.

I think i would have liked it more if it had been properly set up. no mandolin around here ever is. people look at you like your from mars if you actually know how to play one.
