My 2008 Collectors gets the lion's share of my play time (as it should) and is starting to show the first signs of fret board wear. At this point it looks like Ovation put some sort of coating on the walnut fret boards, as there is a little line around the fret board wear - i.e. it looks like I've worn the coating off, without hacking my way into the walnut (yet).

Does anybody know anything about this coating and whether I could re-coat it before I start digging holes in the fret board? Or any other sort of preventative action (other than not playing it). I keep my left hand fingernails filed down as short as I can go without pain.

They never used to put any kind of coating on the fretboards. Don't know about recent years, but I would think it unlikely. It could be that your skin oils have made a sort of coating. As far as I know, there is nothing you can coat it with that wouldn't wear off with use. If there are deep divots, they can be filled with a mixture of glue and sawdust, but they don't really hurt anything or have an effect on playability.

I think the walnut fret boards were impregnated with some sort of epoxy, like the Adamas 1681 series are. I'd try to clean it up with a little Dunlop fret board cleaner and some steel wool or scotch brite pad.
